Fabric Dying
03/04/10 at 9:38am

I have discovered that my new fangled energy efficient washer doesn't use enough water to float the excess dye away from newly dyed fabric and then when I use it, the dye runs on everything.  Ask me how I know -- challenge quilt -- red running all over black and white striped background fabric.  Does anyone know of a brand of washer that still fills up the tub completely?  I'm afraid I may have to go to junk yards and collect parts and build my own.  I actually put the challenge quilt in the bathtub and washed it three times in synthrapol to get the excess dye out.  What a pain.

Thanks,
Arlene

I think I'd go to the laundromat once before I'd wash something in the bathtub 3X, that sounds like a drippy mess!

i have not had any problems washing my hand dyes in my front loader. After the dye has exhausted a 20 minute (or more) soak in cold water after minimal rinsing. Fresh water is a dear resource on this planet!! The first wash is in HOT water on a short cycle with Synthrapol. then two short cycles with warm maybe a tiny bit more detergent--Synthrapol or the Costco brand. Cold machine rinse. Of course 90% of my stuff will never be washed again (I hope). After washing I run the fabric thru the dryer for a bit then hang to dry.
